Y’all, I have a pretty super, special announcement to make. I mean technically, it isn’t my announcement because it isn’t my news, but the second I got the news I wanted to shout it from the rooftop because it legit makes my soul proud. But I was a little gun shy to share because I wasn’t sure if what I saw on Facebook was fake news.
Well, it turns out, it wasn’t fake news. Black Restaurant Week is coming to Indianapolis!! That’s right–it’s true y’all. And I know there are some others who were a little skeptical at first (or maybe it was just me). Either way, I could not be more excited to spend an entire week exploring the cultural goodness Indianapolis has to offer. I mean I am having a full on #BlackAndProud moment.
First off, I only knew about a few of the restaurants on the list. Shame on me, I know. But I don’t have the time to do my research and find all the black owned business. So my husband and I take the 3-4 places we know of and rock out with those. Thanks to Black Restaurant Week, I can add quite a few more restaurants to my list.
Second, while on the surface Black Restaurant Week partners with local, black-owned restaurants to offer prix fixe menus, behind the scenes they are also giving back to the community. Now how exactly can you beat that? This year, proceeds from Black Restaurant Week will benefit the heartland of the black culinary community— the farmers who supply the industry’s ingredients. The organization will donate vital funds to Family Agriculture Resource Management Services(F.A.R.M.S.) in support of its efforts to provide legal and technical services to farmers of color.
And Indy isn’t the only city to get a piece of this sweet potato pie. If you live in any f these cities, you can get you some too!
For all my Indy peeps, here are the restaurants participating in Black Restaurant Week happening July 21-28th. Let me know if you want to join me for lunch or dinner because I plan to hit up every spot on the list.
